「Go our separate ways」

<英語でdefinition!> The breaking of a relationship between two people or organizations.

直訳すると、「私たちの別々の道を行く」。大体の意味は取れますが、例文を見るとよく分かります。議論が二つに完全に割れてしまい、どうにもならなくなったとき、この表現が使われます。

例文 This arguing cannot continue! It has to stop! I think it is time we both went our separate ways. I think we should break up.

(この議論はもう続けられないな!ここで止めなければ。我々の意見が二つに完全に分かれてしまったようだ。ここで解散すべきだと思うよ。)

Naomi: How long have you been in Japan, Jeff?
Jeff: I’ve been here since August.
Naomi: Oh, really? And how long are you planning on staying?
Jeff: Well, my contract is for two years. But I would like to stay longer. I really like Japan.
Naomi: Really? Have you been to many places in Japan?
Jeff: No. But I am going to Kyushu in two weeks.
Naomi: Kyushu? How long are you going for?
Jeff: Just a couple of days. I’m going to meet an old friend I haven’t seen since I was a high school student.
Naomi: How exciting!
Jeff: Yeah, she is going to meet me after work and take me to a Japanese style pub.
Naomi: After work? Oh, she works in Kyushu?
Jeff: Yeah. She has been in Japan for 7 years.
