一般的に関係詞節では、thatやwhichが使われます。

→ It was her who brought those flowers.

→ This is the park where we met a year ago.
(1) では、Sheがwho(関係代名詞)で置き換えられ、一つの文に書き換えられています。

| Manager: | With your impending departure and the insistence from senior management that we must promote from within, we’ve got to get our heads together and think of a suitable candidate. Any initial thoughts? |
| Assistant Manager: | Tina is someone whose commitment and loyalty can never be questioned. Furthermore, she has forged strong professional relations with the clients she deals with. |
| Manager: | True, but she just isn’t dynamic enough for it. Two years ago was the time when she showed the most promise, but since then she has slipped back into mediocrity. I can’t see her being able to multi-task when the pressure is on. |
| Assistant Manager: | Well, what about Steve? Gone are the times when you worried about his lack of focus. Putting him charge of our larger accounts has without doubt concentrated his mind. And creating new business is the area where his abilities are best employed. |
| Manager: | Yes, Steve is a strong contender. No doubt about that. The only misgiving I would have about promoting him would be whether he is prepared to make the hard decisions that come with the role. He comes across as being too nice - the sort of person who might shirk his managerial responsibilities in order to keep everyone happy. |
| Assistant Manager: | A criticism levelled at me, I seem to remember. Richard is another person who I could happily pass the reigns over to. He’s dependable, his work is immaculate, and he genuinely loves doing it. |
| Manager: | 2001 when this vacancy came up last time; that was when he should have shown some interest, but he didn’t. What makes you so certain that it’ll be different this time around? |
| Assistant Manager: | In his defence, he was young at that time and was still learning the ropes. I think he would be prepared to take the step up now, though. |
| Manager: | Well, the boardroom is the place where the final decision will be taken. So, are we both agreed that it’s out of these three for the job? If so, I’ll pass on our thoughts to the chairman. |
| Assistant Manager: | For what it’s worth, I believe that Steve is the candidate who is most likely to fulfil their promise and provide you with the staffroom leadership you seek. |
