「Take it out on」
「人に～しないように強く説得する」という意味です。
前回ご紹介した“Talk me into doing”は “～することを強く説得する”という意味でした。今回は「into doing」ではなく、「out of doing」ですので前回とは逆の意味、“「～しないように」強く説得する”となります。
Meaning:To strongly persuade someone to not do something.
Example:I have tried to talk Wayne out of quitting his job at the bank. I think it would be a big mistake!

| Philip: | I can’t believe it’s 2008 already! As my dad said, time passes faster the older you get. Do you have any big plans for the year? |
| Akira: | The highlight for me will undoubtedly be the summer Olympics in Beijing. I’ve got a week off work, and apart from the flight everything is booked. |
| Philip: | I wish I could share your enthusiasm. Like most, I would look forward to the sport spectacular that is the Olympics, but with all the doping scandals in Athens and since, I can’t help thinking it’s image has been irreparably tarnished. |
| Akira: | Being a tad cynical aren’t we? Those that test positive for steroids are in a very small minority. Plus, it’s in the best interests of the Olympic authorities to test even more rigorously this time round. |
| Philip: | But testing doesn’t solve the real problem, though. And that problem is that the ethos upon which the Olympics has been built has been lost, in my opinion. It used to be about just taking part, but now it seems winning is everything. |
| Akira: | You are just focusing on the leading events and the star performers in these events. There are thousands and thousands of competitors from all over for whom just the chance to compete is a long-cherished dream. That is the real Olympics! |
| Philip: | Yes, and one that we don’t see much of. But you’re missing the point. Like it or not, the stars are the ones the media focuses on, and hence we read about in our newspapers or see on TV. Their antics have ruined the Olympics for me. |
| Akira: | Well, you are entitled to your opinion. However, don’t you think it’s a little hypocritical to put down the Olympics when your favourite sport has seen a proliferation of steroid use in the last couple of years? |
| Philip: | I don’t like drug cheats, full stop. Baseball, along with the Tour De France is something else that I’ll be paying not the slightest bit of attention to this year. |
