会話
労働人口減少に関する、バリーと幸雄の会話です。

次にディクテーションの練習として、音声を聞きながら会話文を書き取っていきましょう。これを数回繰り返し、最後にトランスクリプトを見て、埋められなかった箇所をチェックします。
近年の労働人口の減少について、自身の意見を英語で話してみましょう。あるいは、バリーと幸雄の会話について、賛成・反対意見を述べてみましょう。
| Barry: | Has your company taken on many university graduates this year? We, for the first time, haven’t recruited any. |
| Yukio: | Us likewise. Maybe the dearth of suitable candidates is a reflection of the level of education on offer at universities here these days. |
| Barry: | I beg to differ. Surely, it’s due to the ageing population that the pool of available candidates here in Tokyo has dried up. This has wider implications for the economy as a whole, I fear. |
| Yukio: | Yes, I think you’ve got a point there. The crux of the matter is that people of our generation are not rushing to bear lots of kids, unlike previous ones. Most couples in my age group have only one child—or none at all—whereas my parents had four kids. |
| Barry: | It’s a situation not limited to Japan, you know. All over the developed world, birth rates have fallen below the level required to maintain current population levels. |
| Yukio: | Yes, but the problem is more acute here in Japan, I think. This may be seen as being sexist, but the drop in births appears to have coincided with the sharp rise in women in the workforce. Therefore, should we as a nation be encouraging women to work? |
| Barry: | I’m sure that’s got something to do with it. However, I’m also sure there are other factors at work. For one, younger people are going travelling in droves after they leave school or university rather than getting a stable job and settling down. |
| Yukio: | But even those who don’t do that aren’t having kids. As it’s impossible for the government to force women to stay in the home, perhaps they should fund more child care centres or nurseries for working mums. |
| Barry: | I’m all for that. But while we wait for this impotent government to take some action, companies have to turn to those of retirement age to plug the gaps. |
| Yukio: | Which isn’t a very desirable situation, given that it usually takes longer for them to be trained, or that’s certainly the case in our company. |
| Barry: | Anyway, since we are on the topic, Maiko and I are doing our bit to buck the trend. She’s pregnant with twins! |
| Yukio: | Congratulations! |
