「What’s up?」
<英語でdefinition!> What is wrong?
カジュアルに「どうしたの？」と様子を訪ねる表現。What are you doing?(何をしているの？), What is happening?（何が起きてるの？）等の意味でも使われます。
例文 What’s up with Richard? He’s looked miserable all day!
（リチャードは何かあったの？一日中、憂鬱な顔をしているよ！）

ビジネス -複合形容詞（ハイフンを使った形容詞表現）

名詞や固有名詞は、〔副詞〕＋〔動詞の過去分詞〕で構成された〔複合形容詞〕で修飾することが出来ます。英語表記では、〔副詞〕と〔動詞の過去分詞〕をハイフンで繋ぎます。
＜例＞
(A) This city is highly recommended for sightseeing.
(B) This is a highly-recommended city for sightseeing. (副詞と動詞をハイフンで繋ぎます)
動詞は副詞によって修飾され、名詞は形容詞によって修飾されます。
(A)ではhighly〔副詞〕がrecommended 〔動詞〕を修飾していますが、(B)ではhighly〔副詞〕とrecommended〔動詞の過去分詞〕をハイフンでつなぐことによって〔複合形容詞〕を構成し、City 〔名詞〕を修飾することが可能となります。
注）この表現では、副詞とハイフンでつなぐ動詞が過去分詞形である必要があります。

会話
就職面接での会話です。
[複合形容詞]に注意しながら、まずはトランスクリプトを見ないで音声だけを聞いてみましょう。
次にディクテーションの練習として、音声を聞きながら会話文を書き取っていきましょう。これを数回繰り返し、最後にトランスクリプトを見て、埋められなかった箇所をチェックします。
| Interviewer: | Please come in and take a seat. I’ve looked through your very well-constructed CV, and would like to ask you some further questions. How do you think you could cope working in a highly-pressurized environment? |
| Candidate: | I’m a deeply-motivated person who relishes a challenge. And operating at high speed just makes it that much more satisfying. |
| Interviewer: | But high speed is the norm here. You’ll be constantly pushed to the limit. |
| Candidate: | Stress is something that I’ve never encountered. I eat healthily-prepared food and work out regularly. Keeping myself fit enables me to be 100% focused on my work. |
| Interviewer: | And what about multi-tasking? |
| Candidate: | This is something I do as second nature to me, even in private time. When, say, I’m waiting for the kettle to boil, I’ll go an iron a shirt or take out the garbage. |
| Interviewer: | Think about us all as a machine – each of us being a single part in that machine. When one breaks down, we all break down, so cooperation is a must. You see my point? |
| Candidate: | Perfectly. Be it to clients or other traders, a few calmly-spoken and well-chosen words can help to calm things down. |
| Interviewer: | How’s your private life? Is it likely to impinge on your working time? |
| Candidate: | It’s a commonly-known fact amongst those who know me that when it comes to women, I’m a dead loss. So, I can answer your question with a plain “no”. |
| Interviewer: | Just as well. There isn’t much time for that if you’re to be a success with us. Anyway, please wait here until a well-dressed man by the name of Mr Ross comes in here to ask more questions. |
