“Make a pass at...”
<英語でdefinition!> Talk to a man or woman with the intention of dating them.
ここでの"pass"は、「色目」という意味です。"Make a pass"は「ナンパする」「言い寄る」というイディオムで、at以下に言い寄る対象を付け加えることができます。
ちなみに"pass"には、アメフトなど球技の際に「パスを出す」という際の「パス」の意味もあります。状況/文脈によっては、"make a pass"は、「（球技の最中に）パスを出す」という意味にもなります。
例文 I am sure that man with the dark blue shirt made a pass at me. He was constantly complementing my appearance.

| Ayumu: | As far as I understand it, there are four main factors - the weak Dollar, surging world demand, political tension, and fears over future supplies. Crude oil is traded in US Dollars, therefore, if the oil-producing nations were ever to come to the conclusion that the Dollar was losing its value, they would charge more for their product, which, in fact, is what has happened. |
| Jerry: | So why can’t these nations just pump out more oil? Or are they just trying to hold the world to ransom. They’ve done it before. |
| Ayumu: | Don’t think so this time, though. It’s true they have the reserves - billions of barrels. It’s the tapping into them and extracting them that’s the problem. |
| Jerry: | Right, and the “political tension” is Iraq? |
| Ayumu: | Chiefly, yes. But other OPEC nations have political strife of their own to contend with. This is further giving the markets the jitters. |
| Jerry: | And I bet China is behind the high demand, what with their runaway economic growth. |
| Ayumu: | But it’s not just them. India’s economy is also undergoing a rapid transformation. Their combined population of 2 billion or so will only mean even higher levels of future demand. |
| Jerry: | And even higher prices? |
| Ayumu: | Leading pundits have forecast $200 a barrel by the end of the decade. As pretty much all the things we buy in the shop are transported by ship or truck, expect prices of all things to rise. |
| Jerry: | Expect to? They already have. I just wonder what governments have in mind to stem the growing discontent and get us off our dependence on oil. |
