「Take it out on」

Meaning:To strongly persuade someone to not do something.

Example:I have tried to talk Wayne out of quitting his job at the bank. I think it would be a big mistake!

Takaya: As an England supporter, what did you make of the draw for The World Cup in South Africa?
Roger: Well, my thoughts probably echo those of most other England fans – the draw was kind to us and therefore we should make the quarter finals at least. Our group isn’t the most challenging. Algeria scraped though courtesy of winning a play-off, and while The USA and Slovenia are solid performers, they don’t possess the flair players that could hurt us. I expect us to top the group and then beat the second placed team in group D, which is likely to be Serbia or Ghana. After that, it gets tricky!
Takaya: I know it’s clichê, but to win The World Cup you have to beat the best teams.
Roger: We could face the French in the quarter final, who should never be there, and then a semi against Brazil, who’re among the favourites. What do you think of Japan’s chances?
Takaya: We have a chance of getting out of our group as runners up provided we pick up points against Cameroon and Denmark. The Dutch will romp through the group and take top spot, so the games against Cameroon and Denmark will be pivotal to our chances.
Roger: Umm. I could see Japan advancing. Denmark, while solid aren’t exactly spectacular, and Cameroon’s performances are inconsistent. Both are beatable as long as your stars are on their mettle. Who would you be drawn against in the second round??
Takaya: Italy, more than likely! However, a second round appearance would represent a successful campaign as far as I’m concerned. So, who do you think will lift the cup? England?
Roger: Ha ha! We certainly have the players and the coach to go far. That said, Spain seem to be most people’s favourite after their Euro 2008 triumph. Brazil, Argentina, France and Holland are always dangerous opponents, and of course you should never write off the obdurate Germans! And you?
Takaya: I can’t see past Spain. They’re potent in attack, creative in midfield and miserly in defence. I think it’s their time.
Roger: Although it pains me to say it, I agree with you. Spain are the complete package, and though I think we’ll run Brazil close in the semis, it’ll be a Spain vs Brazil final. The best we can hope for is a 3rd or 4th place finish, I reckon.
