Simon: Officer, I would like to report a break-in.
Police Officer: May I have you name, please?
Simon: It’s Simon Rogers. I’ve just returned from a week-long business trip to find that my apartment has been ransacked, and…
Police Officer: If I may stop you there, sir, are you the sole occupant?
Simon: Yes. It’s on Goldsmith Road, Leith Tower, Apartment 15g. Whenever my work takes me overseas for a period of time I always make sure that I tell my neighbours and ask them to keep an eye on my place. I reciprocate if they are away. We look out for each other.
Police Officer: I see. And have you made a list of what’s missing?
Simon: No, but I’ve noticed a couple of things of sentimental value are missing, though. Everything is strewn across the living room and bedroom, and before I can ascertain what they’ve taken, I’m going to have to straighten the place out. What do you intend to do about it?
Police Officer: First, I’m going to get a couple of officers to come down to talk with your neighbours to see if they’ve seen anyone skulking around or acting suspiciously, and get a forensic team to go over your place from top to bottom, so don’t touch anything yet.
Simon: And what am I supposed to do in the meantime?
Police Officer: I suggest that you contact a relative or someone close and stay with them for tonight. Then we’re going to need from you a definitive list of all that’s been stolen, with a rough description and valuation.
Simon: And then?
Police Officer: Well, sir, of course I’m not at liberty to divulge too much information, but it would appear that you are another victim of a gang operating in your area who are after certain valuables. If your list includes these things, then your case will be passed on to the regional Serious Crimes Unit who are on the hunt for this gang. So, is there someone you can call?
Simon: I have a brother. And please, I want these crooks apprehended A.S.A.P! They’ve violated my privacy! That’s what hurts the most.
