“Take a wild guess”
<英語でDefinition!> "To guess something without knowing any facts to help"
"take a wild guess" は、ヒントの全くない状態で推測をする、すなわち「当てずっぽうを言う」「当て推量をする」という意味です。

| Friend 2: | Really? I can’t fault their decision to hand the tournament to Russia. It’s in line with their ethos of spreading the game globally. Qatar is a little harder to understand, I grant you. A tiny speck of a country with no footballing heritage. |
| Friend 1: | Absolutely! But getting back to Russia. Russia’s infrastructure will require a major overhaul, and corruption is endemic throughout their society. One of the other European bids would have represented a much safer bet. And Qatar being picked just defies belief! |
| Friend 2: | As an Aussie, of course I’m biased, but we have a proven track record of holding and running successful large sporting events. I guess our presentation was left wanting. |
| Friend 1: | Or rather there wasn’t enough money in the coffers to bribe those who made the final decision. I’m sure their votes were bought. |
| Friend 2: | Very cynical! |
| Friend 1: | No! The whole decision-making process needs a rethink. For a start, there is too much power in the hands of so few. And to eliminate all the accusations of shady backroom dealings, the process needs to be transparent for us all to see so there can no longer be any hint of foul play. |
| Friend 2: | That’s not going to happen with the current head of FIFA. He’s a relic of the past - a dinosaur. And he’ll hang on as long as possible, supported by his cronies. |
| Friend 1: | Oh, I can’t stand that guy! |
| Friend 2: | You’re not alone. Let’s hope that when he’s up for re-election a more forward - thinking candidate, and that means not one he backs, can oust him and bring FIFA into the 21st Century. |
