「Take it out on」

Meaning:To strongly persuade someone to not do something.

Example:I have tried to talk Wayne out of quitting his job at the bank. I think it would be a big mistake!

会話

徳川幕府についての会話です。実際に聞き取れるかどうか聞いてみましょう。

Hiro: John, do you know much about Japanese history?
John: Not much. At university, I studied a bit about Japan's post-war reconstruction, but I don't know much beyond that.
Hiro: Have you heard of Ieyasu Tokugawa?
John: Umm, the name rings a bell.
Hiro: Well, he's the guy who is credited with finally unifying Japan back in the 17th century after long periods of civil war.
John: Yeah?
Hiro: He established his government in Tokyo, or Edo as it was known back then, and his successors ruled Japan relatively peacefully for the next 250 years.
John: Is that called the Tokugawa period?
Hiro: Yeah, that's right! In Japanese, we usually call it the Edo-jidai. So anyway, the shogun leaders maintained power by tightly controlling the feudal lords, or daimyo. And do you know how they did it?
John: No, tell me.
Hiro: They made the daimyo spend every second year in Edo.
John: So, why did it all come to an end?
Hiro: There were a number of reasons, but basically it came down to heavy political pressure. I mean, Japan had pursued a policy of isolation during the Edo period, but many people began to realise that there were a lot of scientific and military advantages to be gained by opening up the country.
John: Ah, yes. The benefits of trade!
