| Toshi: | I’ve really enjoyed this World Cup so far. But, as this is the first one I’ve watched, I no nothing of it’s origins. |
| Tim: | I can help you there, Toshi. As it happens, I was reading a book on that very topic last night. |
| Toshi: | So, where and when did it all begin? |
| Tim: | The story begins in the 1920’s. The competition was the brainchild of French football administrator Jules Rimet. His dream was to gather the leading football-playing nations together in a competition to determine the World Champion. The inaugural World Cup was hosted by Uruguay in 1930. |
| Toshi: | Interesting. But has the format of the competition remained the same since then? |
| Tim: | It’s far removed from the competition of today. Back in 1930, there was no formal qualification like now – it was all done on an invitation basis. However, as the journey by sea was long and costly, many potential participants, especially from Europe, chose not to go. As a consequence, only 13 nations made it. |
| Toshi: | Only 13? That can’t have made for a memorable competition! |
| Tim: | On the contrary. By all accounts the level of football on display was of the highest quality. Uruguay were crowned World Champions – defeating Argentina 4-2 in a suitably entertaining final. The success of the competition ensured that it would not be a one off event. |
| Toshi: | I, for one, am certainly glad of Mr Rimet’s grand idea. |
