| Yuki: | Well, that’s summer over for another year. Not the best, was it? |
| Phil: | No. It was a big disappointment. I couldn’t get to the beach as many times as I would have liked. And now we’re into the typhoon season! |
| Yuki: | I’ve always wondered. Is the UK affected by typhoons like we occasionally get here? |
| Phil: | The hurricanes you may read about that batter the USA and the Caribbean don’t make it across the Atlantic. However, the remnants do make it to the UK, and these still bring fairly stormy weather with them. |
| Yuki: | Is that all year round? |
| Phil: | They are usually confined to Autumn – late September to late November. As I am sure you are aware, the UK has many wet days, and this is mainly due to the prevailing winds and sea currents from the south-west. |
| Yuki: | So, the Atlantic has a large bearing on the climate in the UK? |
| Phil: | Without getting too technical, the sea is relatively warm approaching the British Isles, and the air is laden with moisture which forms the clouds that bring the rain. |
| Yuki: | In your time in Japan, have you ever experienced the full force of a typhoon? |
| Phil: | I seem to recall that one skirted past Tokyo four years back. It hammered down with rain for a few hours, and then it was gone. Although it wasn’t classified a hurricane, the south-east of England had a major storm in October 1987. |
| Yuki: | Was that the so-called “Great Storm” I have heard about? |
| Phil: | The very same. It cut a swathe of destruction over areas around London. It brought millions of pounds of damage to property, flattened millions of trees, knocked out power for thousands of people, and claimed 16 lives. I was 14 at the time, and can clearly remember the scenes of devastation from my bedroom window. |
