“Take a wild guess”
<英語でDefinition!> "To guess something without knowing any facts to help"
"take a wild guess" は、ヒントの全くない状態で推測をする、すなわち「当てずっぽうを言う」「当て推量をする」という意味です。

| Ben: | Oh, we have them. They are held annually on 5th November as part of a festival known as Guy Fawkes Night. |
| Nao: | Sorry, but who or what is Guy Fawkes? |
| Ben: | Put simply, Guy Fawkes was a member of a 4 man plot to blow up the Parliament building in London. |
| Nao: | Was this plot successful? |
| Ben: | No, but it so nearly was! According to legend, on the night of 5th November 1605, he was apprehended by guards in the cellars with a barrel of gunpowder – all set to light the fuse. After his capture, he later revealed that his actions were part of a wider plot to kill King James I. |
| Nao: | I know that the UK has a reputation for eccentricity, but why on earth is a failed act of terror celebrated? |
| Ben: | So relieved that Parliament was left unscathed, the government declared that from 5th November 1606 onwards, there should be a public display of thanksgiving which involved the burning of an effigy of Guy Fawkes on a large fire. |
| Nao: | Was that the fate that Guy Fawkes met with after his capture? |
| Ben: | Almost certainly. And to this day, along with a fireworks display, a large fire is made and an effigy of an unpopular figure is burned. |
