「Take it out on」
「人に～しないように強く説得する」という意味です。
前回ご紹介した“Talk me into doing”は “～することを強く説得する”という意味でした。今回は「into doing」ではなく、「out of doing」ですので前回とは逆の意味、“「～しないように」強く説得する”となります。
Meaning:To strongly persuade someone to not do something.
Example:I have tried to talk Wayne out of quitting his job at the bank. I think it would be a big mistake!

拓郎は今年のクリスマスをウィリアムの家族と一緒に過ごす予定です。上の設問で習った表現に注意しながら、以下の会話を聞いてみましょう
| Takuro: | I’m really looking forward to spending time with your family in England this Christmas, but feel slightly apprehensive about it as I don’t know what to expect. |
| William: | Seriously, there’s nothing to get concerned about. My family are pretty easygoing, and Christmas is no exception. |
| Takuro: | So, what is a typical Christmas for your family? |
| William: | On Christmas Eve, without fail, all the immediate family attend Midnight Mass at the local Church. You’ll get the chance to hear me singing Christmas Carols – not something for the faint-hearted…..ha ha! |
| Takuro: | I trust I won’t be expected to join in the singing? |
| William: | It’s up to you. Anyway, after we get back home we have a tipple and then it’s off to bed. The next morning we are all showered and dressed by 9, have a large champagne breakfast, and then comes the good bit – opening the presents! |
| Takuro: | Sorry, but my gifts to your parents are a bit on the cheap side. |
| William: | Don’t worry. And anyway, in England we say “it’s the thought that counts”. Once the present-opening has been finished, we call up absent family and friends and wish them a “Happy Christmas”, and thank them. And until lunch, we have an “open house”, where anyone we know is free to drop in and have a drink. |
| Takuro: | Yes! I’m dying to have a traditional Christmas lunch. Although you call it “dinner”, if my memory serves me well. |
| William: | Yes, my mum’s Christmas dinner is the stuff of legends! Turkey, sausages wrapped in bacon……the works! Then it’s left to the men to do all the washing up and cleaning, while the women put their feet up. |
| Takuro: | Are we going to just lounge around after that? |
| William: | If the weather’s good, we usually go for a walk in the forest. If not, the elder relations have a bit of a snooze while us youngsters watch a film on TV. More often than not there is a good one on. In the evening, we play card games, or charades – that can be quite a laugh! |
| Takuro: | Sounds not too different to how my family spends New Year’s Day. |
