Naoya: Fred! Come over here! Nice to see you out and about for a change. You’ve been a bit of a recluse of late. Thought you had forgotten about us.
Fred: Sorry mate. I’ve had to tighten my belt, what with moving to a new place and all. Besides, I’ve managed to get live coverage of the Ashes on the internet. That’s kept me entertained for the last month.
Naoya: Ashes? What are you going on about?
Fred: Cricket! Australia versus England!
Naoya: Cricket. Now there’s a sport that I truly don’t understand. When I was studying in London I tried to get my head round the rules, but to no avail. And they play for five days, and sometimes it ends in a draw! I don’t see the point of it.
Fred: Cricket is a battle of wits. The bowler trying to out-think the batsman. And this Ashes series has been riveting. There’s nothing between them this time. Which makes a pleasant change, as Australia have been dominant over the last two decades.
Naoya: Sorry, mate. Your enthusiasm is wasted on me. Cricket is about as dull as it gets. Give me a game of baseball any day. At least you’re almost certain to have a result.
Fred: I agree that not all cricket is exciting to watch, but it is the 120 years or so rivalry that has existed between the two teams that gives these games a real edge. We English love to beat the Aussies and visa versa.
Naoya: Anyway, how many more matches do you have to “endure” – five, ten?
Fred: Very funny! The third-of-five matches starts tomorrow morning, and at the moment it’s all square at 1-1, with all to play for.
Naoya: Ok. Well, before we move onto a more “interesting” topic, perhaps you can answer me this – Why are cricket matches between England and Australia known as “The Ashes”?
Fred: Legend has it that after England were defeated in the first match that was played in England, two spectators ran onto the field and burned the bails - part of the equipment. These ashes were supposed to symbolise the death of English cricket. They are kept in a small urn, and are awarded to the winning team after each series.
