Dean: Sorry to disturb you, but do you have a few minutes? There are one or two minor staff concerns that I’d like to bring to your attention.
Wilf: Okay. I am all ears.
Dean: Firstly, Tina. With the onset of our busiest period, we have seen a marked increase in the volume of invoices – an increase that she feels unable to cope with by herself. Even with the extra hours she has been putting in recently, she is falling behind, and therefore – and she has my backing here – she requested that we bring in a temp to deal with the extra workload.
Wilf: But surely we can cope with this amongst ourselves. I recall that nobody was brought in last year when we faced the same. No, I’m sorry, but the others will just have to pitch in whenever they can. If the need be, I’ll even do some invoicing myself!
Dean: Even if this leads to a rise in our overtime costs?
Wilf: If we hire a temp, more precious time will be spent on bringing that person up to speed, whereas we have people here who’ve had the training. So, who else has a gripe?
Dean: Ted and Colin in accounts are of the opinion that since they’ve recently completed their qualifications, they ought to be put to work on things more befitting of their skills. And I believe that Colin aired this grievance to and other project heads on more than one previous occasion.
Wilf: On the contrary, I spoke to him only two days ago and he himself said that he wasn’t ready to make the step up. Unless he has had a sudden change of heart, that is! Well, if he and, for that matter, Ted can prove themselves to me, I will give it some thought.
Dean: Would it be too much trouble if you could tell them this yourself? I’m sure hearing it from the boss will spur them on more than if it comes from me.
Wilf: In that case, could you ask them to come up to my office after lunch? Thanks.
