Philip: As you know, my family and I will be emigrating to the UK next year, and as my son’s 5th birthday is approaching, could you give me some idea as to what sort of school system he’ll be entering into there?
Steven: I can, but bear in mind that the schooling system in the area where I grew up is markedly different from the rest of the country.
Philip: That’s fine. So, at what age do children start going to school?
Steven: Five. Your son will then attend what we call Primary School until the age of 11. My Primary School concentrated on the fundamental subjects, such as Maths and English, plus some very basic science.
Philip: Sounds a bit dry! Is there no room on the curriculum for creative subjects? I’d like my child to have a rounded education.
Steven: Sorry, I seem to have misled you. By “concentrate”, I mean the school pays particular attention to those subjects in order to prepare children for an exam to determine what kind of Secondary School they will enter.
Philip: I presume Secondary School is the U.S equivalent of Junior High School.
Steven: Actually, Secondary School is Junior High and High School all rolled into one. If a child passes what we call the “11 Plus” exam, then he or she has the option of entering a Grammar School, or attending a Secondary Modern.
Philip: So, gifted children go to Grammar School, and the rest Secondary Modern? And I suppose the Grammar Schools get the cream of teaching, and the Secondary Moderns are left with the rest. Seems a touch unfair to me!
Steven: The government of the 1960’s shared your opinion, which is why all other areas have Comprehensive schools. Children of all abilities under the same roof. Anyway, it is compulsory to be at Secondary School until the age of 16, which is when students take GCSE examinations. And if the results are adjudged to be good enough by the school, the student can stay on a further two years to take “A Level” exams.
Philip: That’s a long way off in the distance though. Who knows if we’ll still be there then. But thanks for the info.
