「What’s up?」

| Chris: | If you look at our overseas sales, you can see that they haven’t risen anywhere near as much as the projections. Having plants overseas is proving not to be cost effective. | Chairman: | And how can we cut back on our labour costs here without affecting domestic production? If we announce mass redundancies, that will give our shareholders the jitters, and make us ripe for a takeover. |
| Chris: | But if we don’t cut back these costs in the near future, our retail prices will have to rise again - not a prudent move in the present economic climate. Domestic sales are down 20% on last year as it is. |
| Chairman: | I agree. We can’t keep losing 10 million a month. As for the labour issue, let’s look into ways of keeping job losses to a minimum. Keep the skilled employees on their present terms of employment, but move the rest to part-time contracts. |

“If……will”, or First Conditional, is used when it is highly likely that one action or condition occurring in the present or future will result in another. This conditional can also we used in the negative form.
“If… …will”, という仮定文は、もしも現時点で（ある動作や状態が）起こったなら、あるいは将来起こったならと仮定した場合、きっとこうする・こうなるだろうと予測する場合に使います。ネイティブは、否定的なことを言うときによくこの表現を使います。
