純とジョーが、何故、EU加盟国である英国の通貨がユーロ通貨に変換されないのかを話しています。
上記の設問で出てきた単語・表現が含まれています。それらに注意しながら、まずはトランスクリプトを見ないで音声だけを聞き、どのくらい内容を理解できるかを試してみましょう。
次にディクテーションの練習として、音声を聞きながら会話文を書き取っていきましょう。これを数回繰り返し、最後にトランスクリプトを見て、埋められなかった箇所をチェックします。
| Jun: | I was wondering if you could answer my question. Even though the UK is a fully-fledged member of the EU, why is their currency still the Pound? |
| Joe: | Well, back in 1992, we did take the first steps towards adopting the Euro, but that was abandoned soon after when the Pound fell foul of currency speculators. |
| Jun: | What do you mean, “fell foul”? |
| Joe: | Bear with me, as I might not get it spot on, but it all stemmed from an attempt to peg the Pound at and around 3 Deutsche Marks - the old German currency. All countries wishing to adopt the Euro had to tie their currencies to the DM, and keep it at the same rate for a year. |
| Jun: | So the Pound was unable to fulfil that requirement? |
| Joe: | A number of prominent speculators felt the Pound was valued too high, and to cut a long story short, by selling the Pound heavily, they helped to push it down to about 2.35M and made a fortune in the meantime! |
| Jun: | Was the UK government powerless to stop this? |
| Joe: | On 16th September 1992, a day that has come to be known as “Black Wednesday”, billions of pounds of taxpayer’s money were squandered on trying to keep the exchange rate within the agreed boundaries, and interest rates were raised to an unprecedented 15%. |
| Jun: | 15%! Even that failed to prop up the exchange rate? |
| Joe: | The interest rates rise was a signal that the Pound was in trouble, and that just resulted in more selling, which in turn hastened the Pound’s devaluation. |
| Jun: | no attempt has been made since to have the Euro? |
| Joe: | Giving up the Pound was never a popular thing with the British public, the truth be told. Businesses would benefit from it, I’m sure, but for many people the Pound is a sign of national identity. Would Japan be willing to give up the Yen, I wonder. |
