「The word is」
<英語でdefinition!> The commonly held view.
Word is (言うこと）にtheをつけて限定することで、「うわさでは～」の意味の慣用表現となります。
例文 The word is Tiffany will be the new sales director, although she has not been told officially yet.
（まだ正式な任命はされていないけれど、うわさではティファニーがつぎの営業部長になるよ。）

仮定法過去の「If 〜 …would…」「もし～だったら・・・だろうに。」の形は、＜現在＞あるいは＜未来＞において、明らかに現実では起こる確率が低い動作・状態・事柄について、「もしそれが起こったとしたら」と仮定する場合に使用します。
つまり、想像の世界で物事を例えて言うときに使用する形です。さらにこの用法におけるIf節の中は、過去・現在・未来の内容に関わらず過去形を使用します。これは日本語でも同じです。
例えば、
1.「もし私がお金持ちだったら」If I was rich…
2.「もし彼女に話しかけることができたら」 If I could talk to her…
3.「もし昨日僕がそこへ行かなかったら」 If I didn’t go there yesterday…
1’.「自分のための高級車を2台買うだろうに」 …I would buy two luxury cars to myself.
2’.「彼女をダンスパーティに誘うだろう」 …I would ask her out to a dance party.
3’.「彼には会っていなかっただろう」 …I would not have met him.
1、2は＜現在＞あるいは＜未来＞においての仮定、3は＜過去＞に起こった出来事についての仮定を表しています。

今回は「訴訟」をテーマとした会話文より、この用法を学びます。 以下に続く会話文中には次の単語が出てきます。ここでこれらの単語の意味を学習しておきましょう。右の青字はそれぞれ左側の単語・表現のいずれかの意味を表しています。青字の意味をドラッグし、左の正解の単語・表現の上でドロップしてください。正解ならばドロップした所にそのまま配置されます。

まずはトランスクリプトを見ずに音声だけで聞いてみましょう。「If 〜 …would…」の表現が聞き取れますか？
次にディクテーションの練習として、音声を聞きながら会話文を書き取っていきましょう。これを数回繰り返し、最後にトランスクリプトを見て、埋められなかった箇所をチェックします。
| Lawyer: | I’ve had a chance to thoroughly go over the lawsuit that the citizens of the village of Wedsley have brought against you, and I’m firmly of the opinion that Halmers Pharmaceuticals has little to worry about. |
| Chairman: | So, if they went ahead with it, they would be wasting their time, is that what you are saying? |
| Lawyer: | Precisely. The scientific results they claim to have in their possession are at best vague, and at worst libellous. The claim that Halmers knowing polluted the reservoir and said nothing about it can’t be substantiated. If their lawyer presented these findings in court, it would be easy to pick holes in them. |
| Chairman: | How, what about the evidence of those working at the reservoir? Their checks of the water showed an increase in its acidity which coincided with the opening of the plant. |
| Lawyer: | True. Those findings can’t be dismissed. However, the reservoir is surrounded by farmland, and the pesticides used are known to seep through the soil and into the water. |
| Chairman: | And these also raise the acidity, I take it. |
| Lawyer: | Correct. And what’s more, the readings can’t tell you the source chemical. Again, if you were to examine the results, any chemicals originating from Halmers would indistinguishable from those sprayed on the farmer’s crops annually. |
| Chairman: | Fantastic! However, you said “little to worry about”. |
| Lawyer: | If this case were to go before a Judge, it would bring adverse publicity - which is something I’m sure Halmers could do without. May I suggest an out-of-court settlement? But if they deemed our offer too low, they would go ahead with the case regardless. An offer in the order US$100,000 should be enough. |
