「Take it out on」
「人に～しないように強く説得する」という意味です。
前回ご紹介した“Talk me into doing”は “～することを強く説得する”という意味でした。今回は「into doing」ではなく、「out of doing」ですので前回とは逆の意味、“「～しないように」強く説得する”となります。
Meaning:To strongly persuade someone to not do something.
Example:I have tried to talk Wayne out of quitting his job at the bank. I think it would be a big mistake!

| Joe: | Well, I’m glad to see the back of winter! Unlike most people I know, I just love the heat of summer. |
| Ben: | You call that “winter”? For most of it my heater sat in the closet collecting dust. Winters here are definitely not as cold as they once were. It seems all the scaremongering of the environmentalists was justified. |
| Joe: | So, you are a believer of all this global warming mumbo jumbo! If you look back through time, there are periods where the planet has been much warmer than present. I really can’t see what all the fuss is about. |
| Ben: | Sorry, but you sound like such a politician. I firmly believe the words of the growing number of scientists and their findings. Unlike those in power, scientists generally don’t have a hidden agenda. Research has shown that the rate that the planet is heating up is being accelerated by all the carbon dioxide that is being spewed out in huge quantities on a daily basis. |
| Joe: | Okay. Where’s this so-called evidence of global warming? I can’t see it! |
| Ben: | Obviously you’ve not picked up a newspaper for a long while. Let me give you a clear instance. There are a number of small Pacific islands that at high tide are almost completely submerged. In fact, a couple of the islands have already been abandoned to the sea. The huge ice sheets of the Antarctic are melting. The worst-case scenario could result in sea levels rising 20 metres or more, which would certainly spell disaster for Tokyo! |
| Joe: | That may well be so, but I shan’t be around to witness it. |
| Ben: | You don’t care about the state of the planet that we’ll bequeath to future generations? I find that quite baffling. |
| Joe: | Look! We had one, and I admit it, abnormally mild winter. But just wait until the next cold winter, then you’ll change your tune, I’m sure! |
