「At once」
<英語でdefinition!> Immediately.
Onceの意味は「一度」、At onceで「一度に」。ここからさらに、「すぐに、即時に」という意味にもなります。
例文 If you don’t stop that at once, I will tell your father!

今回は「条件節のifを省略する倒置」について学習します。
まずは例文を見てみましょう。
If I had been there, I would have talked to the guy.
Had I been there, I would have talked to the guy.
（もし私がそこにいたら、その男と話していたのに）
「もし～であったなら」という仮定法過去の条件節ifの文において、動詞（助動詞がある場合には助動詞）を文頭に持ってくることで、ifを省略した条件文が出来上がります。
単語・表現
まずは会話に出てくる英単語・表現の問題です。左の英単語の意味にあてはまるものを右側からドラッグして正解の上でドロップしてください。答えが正しければそのまま配置されます。

Johnと彼の会社のCEOが伸び悩んでいるジーンズの売上げについて、半ば口論をしています。
まずはトランスクリプトを見ないで音声だけを聞いてみましょう。
次にディクテーションの練習として、音声を聞きながら会話文を書き取っていきましょう。これを数回繰り返し、最後にトランスクリプトを見て、埋められなかった箇所をチェックします。
| CEO: | John, I’ve called you in here today to get to the bottom of our failed marketing policy with regards to our new line of tight jeans. To put it bluntly, sales are not what they should be. |
| John: | I can appreciate your disappointment. However, had sufficient funds been made available to us in marketing, we would have been able to conduct a more thorough market research than we did. |
| CEO: | I fear that it’s not a question of money. Would you have chosen a better strategy had the budget been larger? As you well know, the domestic market for jeans is booming. Just look at our competitors sales figures for proof! |
| John: | At that, I must protest. When these jeans were launched, I seem to remember that upping our domestic market share was of secondary importance to you, and I allocated my staff and budget accordingly. Had I known your true priorities, of course I would have acted differently. |
| CEO: | Had you fully read my memo of April 10th, our priorities would have been as clear as day to you! I’m sorry, but I’m firmly of the opinion that it’s down to your incompetence that we are now lagging far behind our competitors. |
| John: | What are you really saying here? |
| CEO: | Well, I regret to say that the decision has been taken to relieve you of your position. Had I known your lack of ability to follow instruction, I would have never promoted you. |
| John: | Right! I can clearly see that my skills are no longer wanted here. You’ll receive my letter of resignation shortly. |
