「From bad to worse」
<英語でdefinition!> Becoming more and more unacceptable.
“bad（悪い）状態からworse（もっと悪い）状態へ”。つまりこの表現は、「もともと悪い状況/状態にあったものがさらに悪化すること」を言います。
例文 Ayumi’s English grades have gone from bad to worse - 50% last semester, to only 31% this semester.

| Nathan: | Yesterday was the first time for me to pass through Shinjuku station late at night, and I was truly shocked at the number of homeless people I saw. I never would have believed that in Japan, of all countries, homelessness was an issue. |
| Hayato: | Really? Well, I’m a little surprised at your naivety. Yes, Japan may be the second largest economy in the world, but we, too, have our social ills. |
| Nathan: | Evidently. However, most of those I saw were middle-aged or older. I could understand it if they were young. Most of the homeless in the UK are teenagers who have run away from abusive parents. |
| Hayato: | Yes. I recall being approached by a few homeless in London begging for money who couldn’t have been much older than 16. Very distressing. But here the motives for dropping out of society are different. |
| Nathan: | In what way? |
| Hayato: | I take it you noticed that most of the homeless were men. Well, as I understand it, some men who have seen their businesses fail or have been fired from their jobs, have chosen life on the streets as a form on penance, due to being so ashamed of their failure. |
| Nathan: | And the shame it brings on their families, right? And they are too proud to ask other relatives for help? |
| Hayato: | I believe so. Others have gambled away all their assets, while others have simply decided to drop out of mainstream society altogether. Maybe to escape the stresses of modern life, or for more sinister reasons. But they are in the minority, however. |
| Nathan: | But I was heartened to see that most of them appeared to be in good health. The government must be giving them some assistance, right? |
| Hayato: | I don’t know about that, but there are some charitable organisations for them. But you have to remember, most homeless are people that have lived an ordered life at some point, and just because they don’t have a fixed abode, they see that as no reason to lose all self-respect. |
| Nathan: | Hence all their belongings that I saw were kept neat and tidy. |
| Hayato: | Exactly. It is a common misconception that the homeless are dangerous. Nothing could be further from the truth! |
