| Neil: | Kenta, you have satellite TV, don’t you? Well, I bought one myself last week, and I was wondering if there were any programmes that you recommend. |
| Kenta: | Regretfully, I don’t get to watch as much TV as I would like, but there is one American comedy I watch every week, without fail. The concept is pretty original. It’s loosely about Karma. |
| Neil: | By Karma, you mean ‘what goes around comes around’, or ‘you reap what you sow’? |
| Kenta: | Broadly speaking, yes. After getting hooked on the programme, I did a bit of research about Karma, and it is a notion that is central to many Indian religions. Followers believe that every living thing is the one solely responsible for their own actions, and the consequences of these actions on other living things. |
| Neil: | I’m intrigued. So, how can a comedy be based on a religious belief? |
| Kenta: | In the first episode, the central character, who is a petty criminal, wins a substantial sum of money on the lottery. He starts whooping with joy in the street and is promptly run over by a car and the winning lottery ticket is knocked out of his grasp and floats away. |
| Neil: | Yes, that’s Karma! How does it develop from there? |
| Kenta: | While in his hospital bed, he watches a TV show about Karma, and this gets him thinking about all his wrongdoings. So, he makes a list of them and resolves to dedicate his time to helping all those he has wronged. |
| Neil: | I like the sound of this show. Much better than most of the moralising sitcoms that is the typical fare of American TV. |
| Kenta: | Give it a try. The central character enlists the help of his simple brother to try and cross off all the items on his list. But of course, there are many twists in each episode. |
| Neil: | Thanks for the tip. Generally, we have similar tastes in comedy, so I’m pretty sure this will be up my street. |
